Zwart Wit

The special "Crappy Independence Day" show approaches again and the penultimate song is a bit peculiar. It is in Dutch. Yes, I know it is in Dutch. It is intentional, and I wish to explain why before everyone listening assumes I've gone nuts for including a song in Dutch for an Independence Day show.

The show is broken up into chunks of songs with themes through the preceding year in the US and the last two songs are about racism. "Zwart Wit" by the Frank Boeijen Group is decrying the murder of Kermin Duinmeijer, a black teenager from the Netherlands Antilles, by a racist skinhead in Amsterdam in 1983. The line "Who want's blood on the back seat" was because the cab driver incorrectly believed it to be illegal to carry seriously injured people and that they would have to be taken in an ambulance instead. I have placed the lyrics and their translations below side by side to make the meaning of it more obvious.

Hij liep daar in de stad
's Avonds laat
Plotseling aan de overkant
Zag hij ze staan
Iemand riep: je hoort niet bij ons
Mes, steek, pijn
He walked there in the city
Late at night
Suddenly across the street
He saw them standing
Someone shouted: you're not one of us
Knife, stab, pain
Think carefully which side you're on
Don't think black
(Don't think black)
Don't think white
(Don't think white)
Don't think in black and white
Don't think black
(Don't think black)
Don't think white
(Don't think white)
Don't think in black and white
But in the color of your heart
But in the color of your heart
Donker was de straat
Op weg naar het plein
Een taxi, het is te laat
Het is voorbij
Wie wil er bloed op de achterbank
Van de werkelijkheid
Dark was the street
On the way to the square
A cab, it's too late
It's all over
Who wants blood on the back seat
Of reality
Think carefully which side you're on
Don't think black
(Don't think black)
Don't think white
(Don't think white)
Don't think in black and white
Don't think black
(Don't think black)
Don't think white
(Don't think white)
Don't think in black and white
But in the color of your heart
But in the color of your heart
